misconceptions about discipleship

INDIVIDUAL DISCIPLESHIP
Misconceptions
  • Discipleship has to be structured and/or formal
  • Discipleship isn't my calling
  • I am not qualified to disciple people
How to overcome misconceptions by understanding that:
  • Discipleship is the purpose of the great commission, which is a command for all Bible believing Christians
  • Realizing that discipleship starts with building relationships
  • Understanding that God has called us to disciple others. He will equip each of us to do it in a way that goes along with who He created us to be

DISCIPLESHIP WITHIN THE CHURCH
Misconceptions
  • Discipleship has to be structured and/or formal
  • Our people have been in church longer than I've been a preacher, we can't teach them anything new.
  • New Christians aren't interested in learning the in's and out's of the Bible
How to overcome misconceptions
  • Realize discipleship starts with building relationships
  • Sometimes discipleship is not about teaching people in our churches something new, sometimes it is about teaching them how to effectively share their faith and the knowledge they have.
  • Sometimes discipleship is teaching people who have been around for a long time something new. Do not assume people are well learned in their Bible simply because they have grown up in church.
  • New Christians are seeking answers to their new found faith, but they don't know how to study the Bible for themselves. More than likely the Bible is not a book they've picked up before and if they have, it's probably been a while.
